Meet the Founder: The Story Behind Book Vendi
Hi, I'm Emma. And I didn't plan to start a business. I planned to read a book.
The Story After years of the beautiful, exhausting blur of running a small business and raising two kids, a family holiday to Japan handed me something I hadn't realised I'd lost — a quiet moment, a great book, and the permission to disappear into it.
Japan did two things to me. It reminded me how much I loved reading. And it showed me what a vending machine could be.
Because in Japan, vending machines aren't just drinks and snacks. They're experiences. They're unexpected. They're fun. And somewhere between the bullet trains and the bookshelves, an idea started forming.
I came home and read like my life depended on it — 18 months of novels stacked on my bedside table, kindle always charged, audiobook always queued. Romance, fantasy, everything. And the more I read, the more I wanted to do something in the book space.
A traditional bookshop felt out of reach. So I did what I always do — I started researching, planning, testing, and quietly building something no one in Australia had done before.
01. I gave myself a simple brief.
It had to work alongside real life — another job, two kids, a full and wonderful household. It had to be full of joy. And it had to create that OMG, how cool is this? moment for whoever stumbled across it. Book Vendi launched its first machine in July 2025. A second followed in December. A third is on the way — and I'm just getting started.
02.
Then something magical happened.
I introduced mystery reads at Christmas — beautifully wrapped books with nothing but a genre hint and a teaser blurb on the outside. No spoilers. Just pure anticipation. Book Vendi | Website Copy — 7 Page Structure They made up 70% of sales. And they never stopped. So I leaned all the way in. Every machine is now stocked with mystery reads and bookish accessories, featuring indie authors alongside bestsellers — all curated with the same care I'd want as a reader myself.

I built Book Vendi because I know what it feels like when the right book finds you at the right moment.
The idea that I get to create that feeling for someone else?
That feels all kinds of special.
